Children at your workplace see how you treat people as well as what you make.

I shared this day at dua with my three boys alongside a thought about building a company with high standards. I wanted the next generation to find something worth being inspired by. Bringing them into that environment made the idea of being a role model feel very concrete.

A workplace visit does not need to become a lesson about future careers. It can simply open a window onto what adults spend their days doing and how they treat one another while doing it.

Let children at your workplace see the work

When a child asks what a company does, begin with the people it is trying to help. Then show an ordinary piece of work that contributes to that purpose. A question being answered or a problem being worked through can make more sense than a complicated job title.

Leave room for their questions. What seems obvious to you may be completely new to them. You do not need to turn every question into a polished explanation.

Let standards show in behaviour

The standards I mentioned in the caption raise a question for adults too: what would a visitor learn from watching us? Would they see people keeping agreements, listening and taking care with their work?

Children do not need to choose our path. The example worth offering is that work can be taken seriously and people can be treated well. That is a useful ambition to bring back to an ordinary working day after the visit ends.
