An Arbëreshë song in a restaurant in Civita

In a restaurant in Civita, I noticed an Arbëreshë song about youth, joy and blessing. It was another small moment in which the language connected the visit to something familiar.

The title was “Kam këndomi moj kopile”. In the displayed Italian translation, the word at the end referred to young women. That context matters: a word can sound different to a present-day Albanian reader from the way it is used in a particular song or local tradition.

I shared the message I took from it: enjoy youth, sing and welcome life. Rather than reproduce the verses here, I want to keep the memory of finding them in an ordinary place, during a meal.

Not every encounter with heritage happens in a museum. Sometimes it is a text on a restaurant wall that makes you stop, read and ask another question. That was part of what made my time among the Arbëreshë special.
