Self-respect and promises meet in the small things you actually follow through on.
Stand up for yourself. Respect yourself. Work towards your dreams even when other people do not believe in them. In this post, I connect those ideas with something less glamorous: taking responsibility for your decisions and keeping the promises you make to yourself.
It is easy to turn self-respect into a speech. The harder question is what you do after the speech ends.
Put self-respect and promises into practice
Choose one commitment that matters to you and is within your control. Be precise about the action. “Work on my idea” is vague; “write the first paragraph before lunch” gives you something you can do.
Keep the promise small enough that it does not depend on having a perfect day. The point is to practise following through, not to create another reason to attack yourself. Other people’s approval cannot do that work for you.
Take responsibility without becoming your own enemy
You will sometimes miss a commitment. Look at what happened: was the action unrealistic, was the time badly chosen, or did you choose something else? Adjust the plan and begin again. Owning a mistake does not require turning it into your identity.
Being the main character in your life does not mean everyone else becomes unimportant. It means accepting your part in writing the next page. Start with one promise, one honest decision and an action you can stand behind. Let your self-respect show up in what you do.
