Be your number one fan. In this post, I am talking about the relationship you have with yourself: believing in your ability to work, learn and take a next step without waiting for everyone to approve.

That matters when the first version of something feels awkward. A video, an application, an idea or an honest conversation may not receive the reaction you hoped for. Your support for yourself does not have to disappear with the applause.

Talk to yourself like someone you want to help

Notice the difference between a useful observation and a personal attack. “This introduction is unclear” points towards an edit. “I am terrible at everything” gives you nowhere to go.

Try replacing the attack with a specific question. What part needs practice? Which piece did you finish? And what would make the next attempt clearer? Encouragement can be direct and honest. It does not require pretending your work is already perfect.

Separate support from certainty

Being your own fan does not mean dismissing everyone else’s perspective. Someone can give you useful feedback without deciding your worth. Listen for the part you can use, ask for an example, and choose what to change.

For example, you can say, “This needs work, and I am willing to work on it.” That is a stronger foundation than demanding constant reassurance or refusing every criticism. Give yourself permission to begin, then back that permission with effort. The relationship with yourself continues beyond the result of any single attempt.
