Sharing imperfect work gives a first version the chance to teach you something.
This video began with a conversation with friends about creativity and the courage to express it. The thought of sharing can stop a person before they even start making something. I include myself in that conversation: recording and sharing a video is not always easy.
The invitation in my caption is simple. Encourage each other to be open and to create. It does not have to be perfect before it can be shared.
Make sharing imperfect work feel manageable
Sharing does not have to mean a public launch in front of everyone you know. Choose one person whose response you trust, or a small group interested in the subject. Tell them what stage the work is at and what kind of response would help.
For a short piece of writing, ask which sentence stayed with them. For a video, ask where the idea became unclear. That gives the conversation a purpose beyond a general verdict on whether you are “creative”.
Encourage the attempt as well as the result
If someone shares unfinished work with you, take the risk they took seriously. Point to something specific, then offer a useful question or observation. You can be honest without making the person regret showing up.
For your own work, choose a version small enough to finish and share. A paragraph counts. A rough sketch counts. One clear thought on camera counts. The next version can improve through what you learn. Let the first version exist long enough for that learning to happen.
