Whose advice fits the decision in front of you?
Don’t take advice from someone whose life you would not want to live. That is the blunt version of what I shared.
The question underneath it is worth staying with: where is this advice taking me?
Someone can sound certain and still be heading somewhere I don’t want to go. Before I turn their opinion into my next decision, I want to look at the direction, not just the confidence.
That doesn’t mean a person needs a perfect life before they can teach me something. I can learn from a mistake, from experience, from someone who chose a different path. Listening and handing over the steering wheel are different decisions.
What are they actually helping me understand? Do they know the part of life we’re talking about? Do I want the trade-offs that come with their answer?
Advice deserves thought. It doesn’t automatically deserve obedience.
If I’m the one who has to live with the decision, I need to stay in it. Whose voice are you following—and have you chosen it yourself?
Listen, question and choose
For example, separate the advice itself from the person’s confidence. Write down the action they recommend and the reason they give. Then ask which part rests on experience and which part is an assumption about your situation. That makes a broad opinion easier to examine.
Also consider what the advice leaves out. A choice that suits one person may depend on time, support or priorities that another person does not share. You can respect their experience while still asking how it relates to your own circumstances.
Finally, deciding whose advice to follow does not require dismissing everyone who disagrees with you. A useful disagreement can reveal something you missed. Give the idea a fair hearing, ask a clearer question and keep the decision connected to the life you actually want to build.
