Spirituality in daily life means more to me than the outward signs of a spiritual identity.

Spirituality has many layers. In this reply, I questioned the idea that a collection of objects, clothes or experiences can tell you how spiritual someone is. For me, the starting point is being grounded and being a good person.

That is my perspective on spiritual life. It does not require everybody to use the same practices or to express belief in the same way. It asks what those practices mean in the way we live.

Let spirituality in daily life show in your actions

How do you respond when someone disagrees with you? Can you listen without making the other person smaller? Can you admit that you do not know something, or acknowledge the effect of a careless word?

Those are questions you can bring to a conversation today. They are more concrete than deciding whether you look like the kind of person who has everything figured out.

Let the practice reach daily life

If a practice matters to you, ask where it shows up beyond the time you spend doing it. Does it help you notice your behaviour? Does it invite you to act more thoughtfully? What would that look like in a relationship or an agreement you need to keep?

You can enjoy the objects, gatherings and rituals that have meaning for you. My point is about what gets placed first. The outward signs should not become a substitute for the difficult, ordinary work of treating people well and keeping your feet on the ground.
