Before your first public video, practise speaking to the camera

Someone asked me how to start making YouTube videos when embarrassment keeps getting in the way. The equipment was already bought. The difficult part was pressing record and sounding natural.

My first suggestion was simple: record without promising yourself that you will publish. Use your phone, choose a subject and explain it. Then try again. The purpose is to become familiar with your voice and your face on camera, not to produce a perfect first take.

I remember finding it uncomfortable too. Practice gave me a way through that feeling. You can make several versions of the same message and decide later which one you want to share.

Having a vision does not make the awkwardness disappear. It gives you a reason to work through it. Start with one private recording today. This is advice from my experience, not a guarantee of an audience or income.
