At the Devil’s Bridge in Civita, the Arbëresh town we call Çifti, I shared a local legend.
In the version I told, the devil built the bridge in a single night. In exchange, he demanded the soul of the first to cross it. A man outwitted him by sending a sheep across first.
It is a legend, not an account of how the bridge was actually built. But it is one of the stories that gives a place its character. Among the rocks of Calabria, each stop seemed to have a story of its own.
