Foreign influence: my argument starts with corruption at home

A comment about Rama’s remarks in Israel prompted another response from me. I said I was looking into foreign interests and their connections with Albanian politics. Then I turned the argument back towards our own institutions.

My point was that outside actors looking for an advantage can exploit corruption at home. In the recording, I named several nationalities rather than presenting the problem as belonging to one country. The common factor in my argument was the opening created by officials willing to abuse their position.

I also referred to Kosovo. Those references were broad political observations; the recording did not supply case files establishing offences by named foreign actors.

Documented concerns, without assuming guilt

The European Commission’s 2026 Rule of Law country chapter on Albania identifies continuing corruption risks in policing and procurement. It also recognises SPAK’s positive results against high-level corruption. Both findings matter.

Editorial context: that assessment supports concern about institutional vulnerabilities. It does not prove every allegation of foreign influence or money laundering, or make nationality evidence of wrongdoing.

The conclusion I expressed in the video was to tackle domestic corruption so that outsiders have fewer opportunities to exploit it. That is my political argument. It is not proof that removing a particular official would end all foreign influence.
