What is money worth if you have no time to live?

Someone challenged me about time: people with many businesses and a lot of money cannot be involved in everything. They are busy. I understand that argument, but my view of success has changed. If I cannot use any of my time as I wish, more money does not answer the whole question.

The conversation that stayed with me

In my video, I referred to Tim Ferriss’s conversation with Rolf Potts. Ferriss describes wealthy people who could barely stay at a gathering and a man whose many homes had become an obligation. These are anecdotes from their conversation, not people I personally met. Read the original podcast transcript.

What stayed with me was the relationship between possessions and freedom. Money should help me live the life I want. If maintaining everything I own consumes that life, I have to ask what I am building it for.

What I want to have time for

In the recording, I named family, friends, health, sport, hobbies and issues that matter to our community. I also mentioned my own interests: making a podcast and travelling through Europe. These are things I want room for while I am living, rather than rewards I keep postponing.

I do not see having money and having time as opposites. I want both enough money and the freedom to choose how I spend my days. The number of hours I work is not, by itself, my definition of a good life.

That is the question behind this post: what is the money making possible, and do I still have time to enjoy it?
