In Rome, I stopped at the column dedicated to Mary and shared a detail that caught my attention: the work of the firefighters who raised it.
Rome’s official tourism service records that the Column of the Immaculate Conception, in Piazza Mignanelli, was inaugurated on 8 December 1857. It says 220 firefighters raised the column, and connects their work with the annual floral tribute on 8 December. The city’s account of the monument.
In my original post, I reflected on the contrast between ancient Rome and the later Christian city. These belong to different historical periods; the nineteenth-century monument should not be confused with the authorities of Roman antiquity.
Walking through Rome brings those layers close together. What looks at first like a single monument opens into questions about faith, power, memory and the people whose work made the monument possible.
